Cosmonaut has concerns over NASA's contingency plan

The ISS Expedition 11 chief, Sergei Kriailev has concerns over NASA's
contingency plan to use the ISS as a "safe haven" for a shuttle crew in
the event of an emergency. At the same time, excitement is heating up as
the proposed May launch date of Discovery draws near. Here on Earth,
debate rages in the archeology world over the famed Turin shroud. Everyone
knows about Stonehenge, but now, a wooden version has been discovered in
Russia. That and more in the Starry Messenger
The Sky This Week
The Moon flirts with the Sun this week, emerging as a slim crescent in the
evening sky by the week's end. New Moon occurs on the 8th at 5:28 pm
Eastern Standard Time. Try your luck at spotting an extremely thin lunar
crescent the next evening just after sunset. For skywatchers the night sky
still offers some of the most dazzling stars of the year as the striding
figure of Orion leads the rest of the stars of the Great Winter Circle
across the meridian between 9:00 pm and midnight.

NASA gets 'go' fever
The most important question isn't whether Discovery is technically ready
to fly with new safety features and emergency procedures, but whether the
agency itself has learned from the crucial errors most common to
Challenger and Columbia, errors that grew out of a management culture that
discouraged criticism and sacrificed safety for image-puffing and
budget-cutting.

The constellation Canis Major, the greater dog has been known since
ancient times as the dog of Orion. The brightest star, Sirius however, has
been far more prevalent in history.

It sometimes seems that ambitions focusing on the Moon and Mars may
eclipse all other problems involved in studying the universe, the
[0]International Space Station (ISS) being the main one. The fate of the
station, which in the past two years has totally depended on Russia's
efforts to keep it working, is a source of more concern for the Russians
than for its ISS partners.
